A customer in Portstewart recently contacted Lighthouse Locksmiths after experiencing problems with a UPVC back door that had become difficult to operate and eventually would not open at all.
On arrival, it was clear that the multipoint locking mechanism had failed internally, leaving the door locked shut. This is a common issue with older UPVC doors, where the gearbox inside the mechanism wears out or breaks, preventing the handle and lock from operating correctly.
To gain access, the door was carefully opened using specialist locksmith techniques. Once access had been gained, the faulty mechanism was removed and inspected. The failed gearbox was identified as the cause of the problem.
The replacement part was sourced and ordered before returning to complete the repair. A new gearbox was fitted, the locking system was tested, and the door was returned to full working order.
Many homeowners first notice symptoms such as:
The handle becoming stiff to lift
The key becoming difficult to turn
The door occasionally failing to lock
The handle moving but the door remaining locked
If these signs are ignored, the mechanism can eventually fail completely, leaving the property inaccessible.
At Lighthouse Locksmiths, we regularly repair and replace failed UPVC door mechanisms throughout Portstewart, Coleraine, Portrush, Castlerock, Bushmills and the surrounding North Coast area.
